In large parts of the country, there are winter weather warnings that extend as far south as the US-Mexico border. Severe winds and freezing temperatures can lead to frostbite quickly.

According to Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, at least three people have died in the aftermath of the storm, according to CNN. Two of the deaths occurred through car accidents as a result of the weather, and another died for lack of a stable home to seek shelter in.

By Friday morning local time, more than 1.3 million residents from Texas to Maine were without power, as intense winds damaged power lines across the eastern United States.

Power outages have also been reported in Canada, affecting 284,000 people in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario.

In areas along the coast and by large lakes, residents also struggle with flooding.

Several major airports have canceled thousands of flights.
