PHOENIX (AP) — Trent Grisham had two doubles and four RBIs, Xander Bogaerts hit a two-run homer and the San Diego Padres beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-5 Thursday in Fernando Tatis Jr’s return to action. after a long suspension for use of prohibited substances.

Tatis finished 0-for-5 and was struck out twice in his first regular-season game since 2021; he went first at bat and covered right field.

His most notable intervention of the night was on defense in the eighth inning, darting back and left to catch a line drive that prevented Josh Rojas from getting an extra-base hit.

Tatis, 24, missed all of last season, first with a broken left wrist and then an 80-game suspension for using a banned performance-enhancing substance.

Grisham and Bogaerts were among the Padres players who made up for Tatis’ slow offensive start. Grisham drove in two runs in the second inning to put the Padres up 2-0 and had another two-run double in the sixth to make it 7-5.

Bogaerts hit a 405-foot (123.4-meter) home run in the third inning for his fifth homer of the season. Matt Carpenter, for his part, hit a solo home run.

Tatis was greeted with cheers and boos in his first at-bats at Chase Field, thanks to numerous Padres fans in attendance.

For the Diamondbacks, Cuban Lourdes Gurriel Jr. 5-2, one scored, one produced. The Venezuelan Gabriel Moreno 4-0. Geraldo Perdomo 4-2, one run, one RBI.

For the Padres, the Dominicans Fernando Tatis Jr. 5-0; Juan Soto 4-0, one scored, and Nelson Cruz 2-0, one scored.
