Boris Palmer stands by his statements and at a discussion event at the University of Frankfurt. Palmer had repeatedly used the derogatory N-word and dismissed criticism of it. Judging people by using the word is “nothing but a Star of David,” he said.

The Mayor of Tübingen justifies his choice of words to the Tagesspiegel. “Since I was a child, I’ve experienced what it’s like to be stigmatized and excluded. When a group of older teenagers told me that they just forgot to gas my father, it felt exactly like that mob at the university in Frankfurt.”

He went on to say: “To continue calling myself a Nazi and a racist after I had explained to them a minute earlier that Nazis had smeared swastikas on the graves of my ancestors was just unbearable for me. No, I’m not ashamed of it.”

Palmer had already explained on Saturday: “I used the protesters’ method of stamping myself as a Nazi and racist, shouting down and excluding me as a comparison.” He explained to the protesters that Nazis had smeared the graves of his ancestors with swastikas and replies to them that “their method of ostracism and exclusion is no different from the Star of David”.

There was widespread criticism of Palmer’s statements. Among other things, the President of the University of Frankfurt demanded an apology. The moderator of the discussion event had broken off the debate. (tsp, dpa)
