This Monday marks the International work day And although Mexico reaches this date with good macroeconomic indicators, in our country various sectors are still in the process of recovery after the labor crisis that the Covid-19 pandemic left since 2020, said the National Institute of Statistic and Geography (Inegi).

According to official data from Inegi, young people between the ages of 15 and 29 and women face a complex labor scenario, since they are the most affected by unemployment, labor informality, and underemployment.

According to the latest reports of 2023, the Economically active population (PEA) was 60 million, however, of that figure, more than 32 million Mexicans work in the informal sector and almost 1.6 million are without work.

Official records indicate that workers in the informal sector in February of this year 2023 totaled 32.4 million, which raised the informality rate to 55.5%, almost 1 percentage point more than in 2022.

In addition, attention should be paid to underemployed people, that is, those who declared that they had the need and availability to work more hours, where 4.3 million Mexicans, in general, indicated that their source of work is insufficient.

The International Labor Organization (ILO) estimated that young people between the ages of 15 and 24 experienced the greatest loss of jobs in this period of the pandemic and warned that currently unemployment levels remain above the record before Cvid-19.

This Friday, April 28, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador highlighted that the country registered a record level of jobs with social security, with just over 21 million of the 60 that make up the workforce throughout the Mexican Republic.

“In economic terms we have a record, there have never been so many workers enrolled in Social Security, we are talking about 21 million 700 (thousand),” he boasted during the morning conference that marked his return to the public scene after his third Covid infection. -19.

In other words, the rest of the Economically Active Population is in the informal sector, without benefits such as social security, paid vacations or bonuses. The sector of the population that suffers the most from these circumstances is that of young people between the ages of 15 and 29.

According to the Inegi, in the year 2022, the informality rate of the employed population between 15 and 29 years old was 59.5 per 100 people, a figure that is higher than the 59.4 in 2019, before the coronavirus health crisis broke out. .

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, one of the sectors of the economy where employment figures have decreased is construction, in which only 8.2% of the total labor force is concentrated, since almost 60% is concentrated in commerce and services. This situation was recognized by President López Obrador.

“What was not seen, there is a shortage of qualified labor, especially in the construction industry, we lack iron workers, welders. Just as we are looking for specialist doctors, there is also a lot of demand for the workforce,” said the President of the Republic.

However, the federal Executive highlighted that of the 21 million Mexicans registered with the IMSS they have better salary levels than in past years.

“They are going to see what a registered worker earns on average out of the 21 billion 700 who are enrolled in Social Security, and they have increased. Here it is, 527 (pesos per day) on average, and it has increased like never before, but, look at the average, of the total number of workers, the average, 527 ″, he said, pointing out the strength of the economy.
