The paper industry welcomes the proposal of the Federal Ministry of Economics to protect the industry in the current situation with an industrial electricity price in international competition. “An industrial electricity price helps us to maintain added value and employment in Germany. Such a measure is essential for energy-intensive industries,” explained Winfried Schaur, President of the Association DIE PAPIERINDUSTRIE. “We’re not talking about a permanent subsidy here either, but about support until the energy transition is implemented, i.e. a bridging electricity price until 2030”.

Schaur called on the federal government to quickly develop the BMWK plans. For this purpose, a financing concept must be presented and it must be ensured that the bridge electricity price conforms with EU state aid law.

Schaur pointed out that energy-intensive companies in particular are at the beginning of important industrial value chains, the loss of which would be fatal for Germany as a business location. According to a recent short study by the German Economic Institute, up to 2.4 million jobs and a good 240 billion euros in added value depend on the five most energy-intensive sectors.
