Parkland families and survivors will be able to visit the school building before its demolition

Survivors and family members of the Parkland school shooting will be able to enter the building that was the center of the 2018 massacre before its scheduled demolition.

Tours of the 1200 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School building will take place over the next few weeks before it is torn down.

Max Schachter, whose son Alex was killed in the mass shooting, tweeted his feelings about the visits.

A jury has found former police officer Scot Peterson not guilty on charges he faced in the 2018 Parkland massacre.

“I’m not sure I have the strength to walk into Alex’s English class with his blood all over the floor, but I definitely want to be there when the building is torn down. @Browardschools everything should be done with as much reverence as possible.”

The building had been preserved as a crime scene for the trials of the gunman and former school resource aide Scot Peterson.

Now that the trials are over, the building will be torn down, although it is unknown when that will happen.

Before the building is demolished, a judge will decide whether a reenactment of the shooting can take place there at the request of some of the families who have sued Peterson and others in a negligence case.

The re-enactment would use the same weapon – complete with blanks – exactly as sounded and seen, and would be recorded so that any future civilian jury can try to prove that the defendants are responsible for the deaths or injuries.

The judge in the case has not set a date for hearing the petition of the families.
