UEFA announced that Juventus will not be able to participate in the next Conference League

UEFA announced this Friday the exclusion of the Italian team Juventus from the next edition of the Conference League, a place that had been won through the local championship after being in seventh place in the table.

The reason why the Bianconero team will not be able to play in the European competition is due to the “violation of the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play regulations”, according to the statement issued by the highest European football body.

During the past season the UEFA investigated the Italian club for irregularities in its accounting books and determined that there was manipulation of them. That is why last May 10 points were removed from the Italian Serie A standings.

In addition to the sporting sanction of depriving them of the right to compete in the third most important competition in Europe. The governing body issued a monetary fine to the team, which amounts to about $22 million dollars. Although half of this amount will be conditional on good management of the team’s finances between now and the next three seasons.

“Impose to the club an additional financial contribution of $22 million dollars. Of this amount, $11 million is conditional and they will only be applied if the club’s annual budgets for the years 2023, 2024 and 2025 do not meet the established accounting requirements in Annex G of the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Sustainability Regulations”, the document states.

Who will occupy Juventus’ place in the Conference League?

After not being able to participate in the Conference League, the place for the European competition will go to Fiorentina. Team that was eighth in the standings and that also comes from playing the final of this tournament, which ended up losing to English West Ham.

Juventus will be out of any European competition for the first time since the 2010/2011 season when they finished seventh in the standings. For its part, Fiorentina returns to the Conference League for the second time in the last 6 years.

Chelsea were also fined

On the other hand, the English club Chelsea was also fined $11 million by UEFA for incorrect financial information during the years 2012 and 2019. Despite the fact that these bad practices in the finances of the London team occurred during the management of Roman Abramovich, the new management in charge of Todd Boehly has agreed to pay the amount of the fine.

“After its evaluation, including the applicable limitation period, the First Chamber of the CFCB reached an agreement with the club, which has agreed to pay a financial contribution of $11 million to fully resolve the reported issues,” the statement said.
