Carla Bruni is questioned for alleged illegal financing

PARS.- Carla Bruniwife of the former French president Nicolas Sarkozywas interrogated today -May 2- as a suspect in an aspect of the investigation into alleged illegal financing of the campaign from her husband in 2007 with money from Libya, a judicial source told AFP.

The investigation seeks to clarify why a key witness in the case, French-Lebanese businessman Ziad Takieddine, claimed to have delivered briefcases containing millions of euros from Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi to the head of Sarkozy’s team and then retracted his claim.

Investigators suspect that people close to Sarkozy may have worked to get Takieddine to change his story.

Sarkozy, who was president of France between 2007 and 2012, was charged with possible witness tampering in October 2023, as part of the litany of legal cases he has accumulated.

Carla Bruni is considered a suspect

Bruni was questioned as a witness in June 2023, but is now considered a suspect for her conversations with Mimi Marchand, considered the queen of paparazzi in France and close to the current president, Emmanuel Macron, and his wife Brigitte.

According to a source close to the case, the judge in charge of the investigation seeks to determine if Bruni sought to cover up something when he deleted all his messages exchanged with Marchand the day the queen of the tabloid press was charged in this case, in June 2021.

The former model and singer is suspected of having played a role as a liaison between the different protagonists of the case.

Sarkozy will be tried in early 2025 for allegedly receiving funds from Libya in his campaign on charges of covering up embezzlement, passive corruption and illegal financing of an electoral campaign, accusations that the former right-wing president denies.
