IEntitled “Faro-Oeste”, the exhibition presents, in the continuation of a project on the gypsy community, another version of a previous series, with a large selection of photographs printed on fabrics, installed throughout the entire Galeria Quadrum.

The exhibition was initially presented in 2021 and 2022, at the Municipal Museum of Faro and at the Cultural Center of Lagos, in the Algarve, produced by invitation and within the scope of the 10th edition of the Festival Verão Azul.

In 2019, Pauliana Valente Pimentel began to portray some families from the gypsy community in the Algarve, especially in the areas of Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António, in the same region in the south of the country.

The artist’s intention, in this project, was to portray these communities, expanding the territory to the areas of Faro, Loulé and Boliqueime, namely the camps Cerro do Bruxo, Horta da Areia, Alto do Relógio and Monte João Preto.

“This work intends to show the day-to-day life of these families, emphasizing their traditions, with the aim of combating racist and xenophobic prejudices and stereotypes that they are constantly targeted”, explains Pauliana Valente Pimentel in a text about the exhibition.

Born in 1975, in Lisbon, Pimentel has held exhibitions as a visual artist since 1999 and, in 2005, participated in the photography course of the Gulbenkian Creativity and Artistic Creation Programme.

She belonged to the collective (Kameraphoto) from 2006 until its extinction in 2014. She teaches authorial photography, and in 2009 her first author book, “VOL I”, was published by Pierre von Kleist.

In 2015 he received the Visual Arts prize from the Portuguese Society of Authors, and in 2016 he was one of the nominees for the Novo Banco Photo Prize.

It was represented for five years at Galeria 3+1 Arte Contemporânea and seven years at Galeria das Salgadeiras, and is currently at Galeria Cisterna, all in Lisbon.

The “Faro-Oeste” exhibition opens on April 27th at 6 pm at Galeria Quadrum, one of Lisbon’s Municipal Galleries, and will remain open until June 25th.
