• Millions of pensioners will get less money from January 2023
  • Net amount of pension decreases
  • The reason: Health insurance contributions are increasing
  • Who is affected?

In 2023 there are some positive changes for pensioners as the pension system is to be made more equitable. But other innovations are likely to make pensioners less happy. So have to Adjust millions of retirees to a lower net amountsince several Health insurance companies increase their premiums – without informing consumers.

Millions of retirees get less pension

Costs continue to rise due to inflation and high energy prices. However, pensioners in particular are often dependent on every euro. There is supposed to be a pension increase in 2023, but before that pensioners have to cope with losses.

The reason? More than 60 health insurance companies increased their additional contributions at the turn of the year. Pensioners are also affected by this increase. It’s only a matter of a few euros – but especially in the current time every cent is needed.

Who increases the contributions? Most registers require between 0.1 (e.g. AOK Hessen) and 0.7 percent (e.g. BKK exclusive) from monthly income more.

There is so much less net pension – sample calculations

Because the pension fund pays half the additional contribution, this “only” reduces the net pension by half.

For example, if a pensioner receives a pension of EUR 1,000, they will immediately receive one EUR less if they are insured with the AOK Lower Saxony.

If he were insured with the BKK Exclusive, he would even receive 3.50 euros less pension per month. But there are also health insurance companies that keep their contribution stable, such as Barmer, Techniker and Knappschaft.

Health insurance companies do not have to inform about increases – insured persons can do that

One problem is that health insurance companies keep their policyholders not inform about itwhether they increase their contributions. Insured persons must inform themselves – but they also have one special right of termination, which must be claimed by the end of January. But: “Even if the deadline has passed, you can still change if you have been a member of the health insurance company for at least twelve months,” explains VdK health expert Frank Weniger.
