The demonstrators, who come mainly from the Andean regions of the south, demand the resignation of the new president Dina Boluarte, the dissolution of Parliament, a Constituent Assembly and elections.

At least one person has died in clashes between protesters and police in Macusani, an Andean town in southern Peru near the Bolivian border, San Martin de Porres Hospital in Macusani said in a statement on Wednesday.

“At 6:20 p.m., a female, approximately 35 years old, who had no vital signs, arrived at the emergency room,” according to the hospital.

This death brings to 43 the number of deaths since the beginning of the crisis on December 7. The press release also speaks of a “prognosis (vital) reserved” for a “30-year-old” man injured in the “thorax”.

Clashes for several days

This death comes as thousands of Andean peasants have converged on Lima in recent days to take part in a large rally on Thursday. According to local media, the city police station was burned during the clashes.

Peru is rocked by unrest that erupted after the December 7 dismissal and arrest of leftist President Pedro Castillo, accused of attempting to carry out a coup d’etat in an attempt to dissolve the Parliament which was preparing to run out of power.

In order to curb the protest movement, the government declared a state of emergency for 30 days on Sunday in Lima, Cuzco, Callao and precisely Puno, one of the most affected regions.
