Mexico City.- The career of Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio towards the Oscar continues to advance without many obstacles. After triumphing at the Golden Globes and the Critic’s Choice Awards in the category of Best Animated Film, the Mexican film plans to sweep the next Annie Awards.

With nine nominations in total, the production of the man from Guadalajara leads the ceremony, where Netflix, the streaming platform that produces the film, got a total of 50 mentions.

In fact, in the Annie’s Best Film category, a gala specialized in recognizing achievements in the field of animation worldwide, Netflix has three titles in competition.

In addition to Pinocchio, the digital service is listed in the category with The Sea Beast and Wendell & Wild. These compete against Red, from Disney-Pixar; Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, from Dreamworks Animation.

Meanwhile, in the animated indie category are Marcel the Movie, LLC’s Marcel the Shell With Shoes On; Charlotte, from January Films; Little Nicholas, Happy as Can Be, by On Classics (Mediawan); Inu-Oh, from Science SARU, and My Father’s Dragon, another Netflix production.

In addition to film, del Toro is nominated alongside Mark Gustafson in the Feature Directing category, where he is up against the filmmakers behind such hits as Red, My Father’s Dragon, Wendell & Wild and Marcel the Shell With Shoes On.

Other categories in which Pinocchio stands out are Character Animation for Film, Original Music for Film (del Toro’s name shines here) and mentions in the dubbing section, among others.

In addition to the competitive awards, several animation industry figures will receive honorary awards for their contributions to the animation industry, including Pixar writer-director and CEO Pete Docter, prolific TV series creator Craig McCracken, and the late Evelyn Lambart, known for her children’s short films.

The Annies are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year in honor of achievement in the animation industry. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, February 25 at Royce Hall, on the UCLA campus in Los Angeles.
