PJ Harvey told a little about the inspiration and recording process of ‘I Inside the Old Year Dying’

Talking a bit about I Inside the Old Year Dying and according to Consequence of Sound, PJ Harvey put all the songs on the album together in about three weeks.. But what is striking is that he recorded them live at London’s Battery Studio with longtime collaborator John Parish and producer Flood.

“I think the album is about searching, looking: the intensity of first love and the search for meaning. It’s not like there has to be a message, but the feeling I get from the record is love, it’s full of sadness and loss, but it’s loving. I think that’s what makes it feel so welcoming: so open.”

Although yes, the process of writing and recording this album were not easy for PJ Harvey. The reason? Well, the British singer says that, after The Hope Six Demolition Project, lost his connection to music, due to the endless cycle that all bands and artists face: writing an album and going on tour.

However, PJ Harvey was finally able to break out of the rut thanks to the advice of filmmaker Steve McQueen, who motivated her to “remember what she loves about words, images and music and put aside the concept of writing ‘an album’ to focus and play with these three passions”. She also said that the fact that she played her favorite songs by Nina Simone and Bob Dylan “reconfirmed her passion for art.”
