Over the past few months, we’ve been reporting on a variety of quirky ways to control a video game. For example, we have bananas or harps as controller alternatives for Elden Ring. But the Youtuber “SuperLouis64” has made it his mission to make unusual forms of play the norm for his channel. So he has already tried to play Final Fantasy 14 with a duel disk from Yu-gi-oh, or Cyberpunk 2077 to play with t-posing. Louis recently posted a clip on Twitter in which he remake from Final Fantasy 7 plays with a Mail Sword Replica. The clip was discussed on sites such as Videogameschronicle, and fans awaited a full video on the subject. He has now published this on Youtube.
Final Fantasy with motion controls
Basically, the armored sword controller is a motion controller with joysticks and buttons. According to the Youtuber, this can be described as “bad wii mote“. Louis can both attack and parry with the controller.
As he swings the controller for various attacks, he tilts the armored sword in front of him to defend. And as his video demonstrates, this seems to work shockingly well. After some revisions and experimentation with prototypes, Louis decided to test the replica with a 3D printer to manufacture. All the necessary technology was built into this to make the controller usable. Overall, the armored sword weighs in this version 3.6 kilograms and is 1.63 meters great.
This project is possible thanks to the use of two Arduino boards, which Louis explains in detail in his video. However, how many people will use this as a blueprint for their own sword controller is another question.
More games for the armored sword?
According to Louis, the sword can also be used for other games. So he did, among other things Final Fantasy 14 and Elden ring Tested with the Armored Sword controller. All in all, this project undoubtedly joins the list of quirky input devices we’ve seen this year.
