An unusual police operation in Duisburg main station caused a stir among travelers and passers-by on Wednesday. Like Jens Flören, spokesman for the Federal Police in NRW confirmed on request, was a patrol car the Duisburg police even drove into the station building because the Bureau of imminent danger had to go out.

The patrol car in the main station quickly became a topic of conversation on trains, on the platforms and on social networks: there is even a photo of the patrol car in the pedestrian tunnel under the tracks circulating. An Instagram user joked about the “rail replacement service on platform 5 by the NRW police”.
The area of responsibility of the state police extends (not only in Duisburg) to the station forecourt, while the federal police may only work in the area of the federal railway system. “But in such a dynamic situation, you don’t ask about responsibilities – you have to hurry,” says federal police spokesman Jens Flören.
Another act of violence on the platform: one seriously injured
The serious background was actually a violent brawl in the platform hall – on the platform to platforms 5 and 6. Federal police spokesman Jens Flören reports that his colleagues were first at the crime scene shortly after the emergency calls.
However, the fear that larger groups had clashed has not been confirmed so far: “According to the current state of investigation, we know of four parties involved: one victim and three perpetrators. A 27-year-old Algerian was seriously injured, and a 22-year-old Algerian was arrested as a suspect.”
The other two perpetrators could have fled. According to the spokesman, the 22-year-old had to go to the hospital with an “open tibia fracture”. In order to find out exactly what happened and whether more people were involved in the act of violence, federal police investigators are now evaluating the video recordings from the surveillance cameras.
