Port of Miami reopens after maritime accident that paralyzed cruise departures

The Port of Miami reopened to cruise ship traffic after salvage crews surfaced a ship that collided with the Fisher Island ferry.

The chaos unleashed by the maritime accident and the effort to extract the sunken boat delayed travel plans for tens of thousands of people for almost a day, including more than 15,000 passengers at sea on three cruise ships that had planned to dock at the port on this Sunday morning, as reported Telemundo 51.

The event affected the entry and exit of three cruise lines, including the MSC Seascape, the Norwegian Cruise Line and Carnival Celebration.

This Monday morning the terminals were no longer crowded with people and the cruise ships had been able to set sail or were beginning to do so.

The US Coast Guard had closed the port after the 3:40 am accident. and announced shortly after 2:30 p.m. on social media that it was already open after “teams successfully recovered the sunken ship and cleared the obstruction in the North Channel.”

The accident occurred east of the Pilot House Station on Dodge Island, the island of cruise passenger terminals that attracts the attention of many who cross the MacArthur Causeway between Miami Beach and Miami.

A 30-foot boat collided with the Fisher Island Ferry in the channel.

Ferry workers were able to pull a man out of the water who was rushed to Miami’s Ryder Trauma Center, but as he was being transported, the man mentioned that his friend was also on board the ship and was missing.

Cristian Gastón Fernández, of Cutler Bay, was pronounced dead by authorities; while Ángel Domínguez, 29, of Hialeah, was hospitalized in serious condition.

This is the second time that an incident related to the Fisher Island ferry has caused fatalities, since in 2020, two women died after his car fell into the water from the ferry in Miami Beach.
