Powerful storm will cause rain, winds and flooding

MIAMI.- A powerful storm from the Gulf of Mexico, accompanied by lightning, strong gusts of wind, some tornadoes and hail, could affect the east coast of Florida on the night of Friday, Saturday and Sunday, according to the forecast of the National Oceanic Administration and Atmospheric.

The NWS Weather Prediction Center warned that rainfall could cause flash flooding in urban areas.

According to meteorologists, a strengthening area of low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico will gain organization before making landfall in central Florida.

As the system moves over land in a northeasterly direction, severe storms may break out over much of the peninsula, especially in the south, during the afternoon and evening of Saturday.

“Thunderstorms and heavy rain capable of causing localized damage and flooding are possible,” affecting the urban areas of Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe.

The rains will cause some flooding in metropolitan areas due to the saturated state of the soil caused by previous rainfall.

For their part, northeasterly winds could reach sustained gusts of 45 miles, especially on the east coast.

Forecasters do not rule out an isolated tornado in areas near Lake Okeechobee.

Such adverse weather can cause delays for those intending to travel by road, according to NWS.

Over the weekend, dangerous conditions are expected on the beaches of the Atlantic coast and the Gulf of Mexico, with high risks of rip currents and large waves.
