2023 is a very special year for shooter fans because it could be the first time in 18 years that no new Call of Duty will be launched. Instead, at most a premium DLC is planned for the current CoD offshoot Modern Warfare 2. Of course, that doesn’t mean that you have to do without fun shooting. The coming months are still waiting for some other promising genre representatives. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a third or first person perspective, single or multiplayer, cooperative or competitive: We’ll introduce you to the shooter highlights of 2023! Since many of the titles mentioned do not yet have a specific release date, our list is sorted alphabetically for the sake of simplicity.

’83

Antimatter Games | personal computer
We start the list with ’83. Behind it is developer Antimatter Games, known for Rising Storm 2: Vietnam and its dozens of DLCs. So he knows what he’s doing. But this time it’s not the Vietnam War, but the Cold War. In huge first-person battles, you compete with over 80 other players. They are divided into two platoons fighting for dominance over multiple targets. Various infantry weapons and equipment await you. Their ballistics and recoil should be realistically simulated. There are also vehicles and airplanes.

Agent 64: Spies Never Die

Replicant D6 | 2023 | personal computer
Agent 64: Spies Never Die could be straight out of the 90’s. After all, it was obviously inspired by the shooter classic Golden Eye. However, Agent 64 is not a multiplayer party, but a pure single-player experience. As Agent John Walter, you shoot your way through a world full of espionage and intrigue to once again save humanity. You rescue hostages, hack terminals and crack safes. It all looks like it’s 30 years old, but it doesn’t play that way. There’s fluid movement, decent AI, and environmental destruction.

Anger Foot

Free Lives | 2023 | personal computer
When the makers of Broforce come up with a shooter, it’s bound to be wild. In Anger Foot you play a guy who violently kicks in doors – and then the asses of the people behind them. This is the only way to make the Shit City game world a better place. Your vigilante trip takes you through slums, sewers and skyscrapers. Along the way you’ll find new weapons and shoes for even more bang. All of this is underscored by pounding beats. This is how Anger Foot becomes a bloody fever dream that is supposed to offer a lot of replay value with its secrets.

ARC Raiders

ARC Raiders was created by former Battlefield developers. They serve you a free co-op shooter in which you join the resistance to repel the onslaught of a massive mechanical menace from space. The game is played in third-person perspective and with some tactical tricks. Because you’re outnumbered, you have to bet on things your opponents don’t have: teamwork and smarts. You use tools like a grappling hook, collusion within your squad, or the destructible environment to your advantage.

Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon

From Software | 2023 | PC, PS4, PS5, XBO, XSX

It’s been almost ten years since From Software released the last offshoot of its Armored Core series. The Soulsbourne game business was probably just too good. The release of the sixth part Fires of Rubicon is finally scheduled for 2023. He has the franchise-typical gameplay ready again: So you climb into the cockpit of fat mech suits and make kindling of your opponents. You can use tons of melee and ranged weapons, but also a dynamic moveset.

Ashfall

NetEase | 3rd Quarter 2023 | PC, PS5, XSX

Next up is Ashfall, a post-apocalyptic shooter MMORPG. “Again?” we hear you moan. But don’t worry: This time it will be a little different. The makers mix the worn-out premise with science fantasy. You fight against other people, but also against robots or sandworms. You craft equipment, build a base and keep a personal mount to travel the open world. It sounds really exciting, but be careful! Ashfall describes itself as “the first true Web 3.0 AAA game for PC and console” to use a “native, energy-efficient cryptocurrency”. This could go haywire.

Atomic Heart

Atomic Heart is often described as a Russian BioShock. And that’s kind of obvious. After all, the first-person shooter role-playing game mix takes place in an alternative version of the Soviet Republic, which has experienced a rapid rise and then a blatant fall due to its technical advances. Atomic Heart also has terrific insane level and enemy design. And you’re using supernatural tools again. In addition to melee and firearms, you have an experimental glove with which you can shock or levitate enemies.
