This January 13 a group of feminists demonstrated at the Bellas Artes station of the Collective Transportation System Subway (STCM). During the protest there was a confrontation between the protesters and elements of the National Guardwhich began surveillance work at the network facilities the day before.

The women marched from La Antimonumenta to the Line 2 station to show their disagreement.

Videos began to circulate on social networks showing hooded protesters who went up to the turnstiles with a blanket on which they wrote: “Get out of the Metro National Guard.”

Protesters also placed tape around the access card reading devices. In this way they allowed passengers to enter without paying for the service.

In a second demonstration against the presence of the National Guard, a young man was arrested. Hendrik Ortega was escorted by national guards and police. As shown in videos, the also student at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) carried a megaphone and a banner with the message: “Militarizing the Metro is not caring. Get out Claudia.”

In response, the detainee’s companions went to the CUH-4 Civic Court from where they indicated that the arrest occurred while they were demonstrating peacefully. In their message shared on social networks, they attacked Claudia Sheinbaum, head of the Government of Mexico City, since they assured that the Metro, more than surveillance by the GN, needs maintenance.

“Today we are in the Civic Court CUH-4 in Mexico City because our colleague Hendrik Ortega was arrested while we were holding a peaceful demonstration at the Metro facilities. How is it possible that Claudia Sheinbaum wants to fix the network maintenance problems by bringing in the National Guard?” Mentioned those dissatisfied with the arrest of Hendrik Ortega.

The Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC) confirmed that it arrested the young man, but denied that the reason for the arrest was the demonstration. Instead, he pointed out that elements of the Banking and Industrial Police (PBI) sent him because he painted the Metro facilities.

“Good afternoon, in response to this issue, the #SSC reports that #PBI personnel referred the citizen to the corresponding authorities because he painted paint inside the #Metro #CDMX facilities,” the SSC reported.
