The Swede Greta Thunberg and other young climate activists called for climate justice at a rally in Davos on Friday. Despite the freezing cold, about 30 demonstrators gathered on the edge of the World Economic Forum in the Swiss Alps in front of the congress center and held up placards that read “SOS”.

“What do we want? Climate Justice! When do we want them? Now!” they chanted. Pakistani activist Ayisha Siddiqa slammed the Davos event: “I don’t think that in places of such wealth, power and greed we see, feel and comprehend that planet earth is suffering immense pain all around us,” Siddiqa said a rally.

More than 1,700 people died in floods in Pakistan last year. Experts blame climate change and fear that this will lead to more natural disasters of this type in the future.

Greta Thunberg did not speak during the protest. However, at a CNBC panel discussion on Thursday, she described the politicians and entrepreneurs present in Davos as those who “are driving the destruction of the planet the most”.

Climate change is a major topic at the World Economic Forum. In a speech on Wednesday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres accused big oil companies of spreading lies about climate change.

Greta Thunberg attended the World Economic Forum as a teenager in January 2020 and stressed at the time that “our house is still burning”. She complained that her demands were “completely ignored”. (AFP)
