Puerto Rican pride!  There are already 40 medals for Puerto Rico in San Salvador 2023

The sports action of the Delegation of Puerto Rico during the XXIV Central American and Caribbean Games San Salvador 2023 ended on Thursday with the accumulation of more medals.

In total, the Puerto Ricans have accumulated 40 medals so far.

The surfer Havanna Cabrero added early Thursday morning the second silver medal for the discipline, which takes place in Surf City.

Cabrero achieved a silver medal in the shortboard category with a score of 12.60. Cabrero joins Anaís Mendoza, who won silver in bodyboarding on Wednesday. Surfing is one of the sports that debuts at the XXIV Central American and Caribbean Games San Salvador 2023.

The volleyball team is preparing to face Trinidad and Tobago this Thursday.

On the other hand, swimmer Kristen Romano was proclaimed the golden girl of Puerto Rico by winning her third gold medal in smooth swimming.

Romano won the 200m backstroke with a time of 2:12.56. The swimmer, who lost her father in February of this year, tied for gold medals in the same Games with the swimmer Sonia Álvarez from Caguas.

The Carolinian wrestler, Edgardo López, gave Puerto Rico the first medal in the Greco-Roman modality. López obtained the silver medal, when he fell against the Cuban, Oscar Pino.

“The sacrifice was worth it. Many hours of training. One thinks sometimes, ‘Is this going to be worth it? It’s genuinely worth it. When one is on that podium, one says ‘Wow! I achieved this for my country. They are things that one cannot describe”, said the wrestler, who dedicated the medal to his students.

In addition, bowler Taishayé Naranjo won the first medal in the singles event in the history of Puerto Rican bowling at the Central American and Caribbean Games. The junior added 1,356 clubs to win the bronze among 45 competitors.

Finally, the women’s handball team climbed to the podium with a silver medal. Puerto Rico finished the first period with a two-goal advantage, 14-12 over Cuba. In the second half, Cuba reversed the plan to be the ones that tied the match with a score of 14-12 (26-26). In the first 10-minute extra time, Cuba snatched the golden aspirations from the Puerto Ricans with a score of 3-2 and ended the challenge, 29-28.

Congratulations! They are Puerto Rican pride.
