NY.- The Associated Press won two Pulitzer Prizes for journalism Monday, in public service and breaking news photography, for coverage of the war in Ukraine that included stunning images of Russia’s siege of the city of Mariupol.

The New York Times was also recognized with an international reporting award for its coverage of the Russian force killings in the Ukrainian town of Bucha. Other Pulitzer Prizes were awarded for work on the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Roe v. Wade on abortion, on the US government’s policy to separate migrant children from their families at the border, and on welfare spending in Mississippi.

AL.com, of Birmingham, Alabama, was awarded two Pulitzers for local journalism. The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times and the Washington Post also received two awards respectively.

For its public service award, the Pulitzer board recognized the work of AP video journalist Mstyslav Chernov, photographer Evgeniy Maloletka, video producer Vasilisa Stepanenko and reporter Lori Hinnant. For almost three weeks, the AP was the only international media outlet in Mariupol, capturing remarkable images of an injured pregnant woman being rushed to receive medical aid, and of Russian forces firing on civilian targets.

Mariupol’s deputy mayor said the world’s attention to journalistic work pressured the Russians to open an evacuation route, saving thousands of civilian lives.

“AP journalists have done courageous and important work in Ukraine throughout the war, highlighting in particular the human cost of the conflict,” said AP Senior Vice President and Executive Editor Julie Pace. “From dispelling Russian misinformation to helping create a humanitarian corridor, his work has been an incredible public service and we are so pleased that he has been honored by the Pulitzer board.”

Maloletka was also part of the AP team that won the Ukraine Breaking News Photography Award, consisting of Bernat Armangue, Emilio Morenatti, Felipe Dana, Nariman El-Mofty, Rodrigo Abd and Vadim Ghirda.
