Founded in 1997, the Quantic Dream studio made a name for itself with the game The Nomad Soul. Released on PC and Dreamcast, this avant-garde work has left an indelible mark and many have not forgotten the collaboration with the legendary David Bowie. Subsequently, David Cage’s company increasingly leaned towards narrative experiences, to the point of becoming one of the pioneers of this kind of production. While the studio is working on Star Wars Eclipse, we just learned the cost of its takeover a few months ago, by 2022. And it’s significant!

Very well informed, the Insider-gaming.com site has just announced that the cost of the acquisition of Quantic Dream by the Chinese company NetEase flirted with… 100 million dollars. W hile this amount was the subject of much speculation, the figure provided makes it possible to measure the extent of this transaction. For years, Quantic Dream has forged a relationship of trust with Sony and the Japanese publisher has been able to take advantage of several major titles, such as Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls or, more recently, Detroit: Become Human. Plagued by a series of problems, the studio finally decided to change direction to go under the Chinese flag. In this case, that of NetEase.

Sources revealed that NetEase bought Quantic Dream for around $100 million. To obtain this figure, the interested parties actually made a simple deduction based on the Pacte law. Introduced in 2019, the latter makes it possible to prepare a retirement savings plan to replace the old retirement savings products previously offered. As a result, Quantic Dream employees recovered shares. Based on the total amount of these actions, various sources have brought up information that the sum fluctuated between 50,000 and 100,000 euros. Based on this, they calculated that the company went under the NetEase flag for nearly $100 million. At the same time, they estimated that the 51% shares of Quantic Dream held by David Cage should represent around 50 million dollars.

In the twilight of Star Wars Eclipse?

According to rumors, the development of Star Wars Eclipse would not be easy. According to insiders, the studio’s engine would not be suitable for the scale of such a production and there would be a lot of fuss currently to remedy this problem.

The other concern, and which is not easy to resolve, is that hiring is lower than Quantic Dream’s needs. To give an idea, there are currently nearly… 90 vacancies in Paris. The various cases that have tarnished the reputation of the studio are probably not for nothing, but it is now to be hoped that these positions will soon be occupied and that Star Wars Eclipse will be up to such a license. In this sense, the support of NetEase could well be paramount.
