A new world record has just been reached in Dubai where the “P7” license plate was sold for 13.5 million euros at auction.

In Dubai, owning the most expensive objects in the world has become a national sport, even for the most common. At an auction organized as part of a charity gala, a license plate was sold for 55 million dirhams, or nearly 13.5 million euros, reports CNN.

An exorbitant sum spent by a bidder whose identity has not been revealed. According to the organisers, Emirates Auction, this is a new world record. The previous one dated back to 2008, for a plate sold for 12.8 million euros by the same auction company.

An object of speculation

The one that has become the most expensive in the world has nothing special except the mention “P7”. But for the rich Emiratis, a license plate is an object of speculation like any other which can above all drive up the resale price of their luxury cars.

The total proceeds from the big auction reached 17.5 million euros and will be entirely donated to “One Billion Meals”. A campaign launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, to help the most vulnerable communities during the month of Ramadan.

As a reminder, in France, it is impossible to choose the numbers on your license plate. Personalization has been limited since 2016 to the choice of material, plexiglass or carbon fiber, and the department present in addition to the regional logo. A Breton who has gone to live in Alsace can absolutely decide to display the flag of his department of origin. Any customization that is not provided for by the Highway Code is punishable by a fine of 375 euros, as it is prohibited by the Highway Code.
