Recurve archers Katherine Orellana and Óscar Ticas qualified today for the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games during their participation in the 2023 Merengue Cup, a qualifying event that takes place in the Dominican Republic.

In the case of Óscar Ticas, an athlete from the Effort and Glory Program, it will add the fifth participation in the greatest sports festival in America, while for Orellana it will be the first experience in the continental one, which will be held from October 20 to November 5.

Roberto Hernández, technical manager of the Salvadoran Shooting Federation (FESTA), assured that in the archery qualifier four places were in dispute for Santiago 2023.

“The places were only one per country and since Óscar entered the quarterfinals he had already secured the classification because there were three Ecuadorians, two Venezuelans, one from Guyana and Óscar,” explained Hernández.

Historic gold for women’s recurve

The team made up of Marcela Cortez, an athlete from our Effort and Glory Program, Katherine Ulloa and Jocelyn Urías defeated Brazil and won a historic gold medal in the women’s recurve bow team competition.

The Salvadorans secured the gold medal by beating Brazilians Natalie Dias de Souza, Sarah Nikitin and Ana Carolina Teodoro 5-1, in the final that was played today. Third place went to the Venezuelans Nieves Arango, Daniela Chacón and Verona Villegas.

“This is the first women’s team medal in recurve and in a world ranking event in the last 15 years,” remarked Hernández, technical manager of the federation.

On their way to the podium, prior to the final against Brazil, the Salvadoran team beat Ecuador 5-4 and Venezuela 5-2.

For its part, the men’s team, made up of Ticas, Justin Rivera and Héctor Ramos, finished in 11th place.
