In recent years, the numerous threads have also been a free teaching tool for the AI algorithms of companies such as Google, OpenAI and Microsoft.
They urgently need such data sources, because only through the mass statistical evaluation of training data can AI systems develop language models that sound real and also present the users with statements that are correct in terms of content. In view of the quality that the artificial bots have achieved in the meantime and the intentions of their operators to finally commercialize their abilities properly, one naturally asks oneself on Reddit why the training data is provided free of charge.
Risk to Reddit
The company has now announced that it will equip the API, with which data can be obtained from the platform, with a payment barrier. “Reddit’s data corpus is really valuable,” said Steve Huffman, founder and CEO of Reddit, in an interview with the New York Times. “And we don’t have to give that value away for free to some of the largest companies in the world.”
It’s not just about the value for the resources Reddit has invested in building and nurturing its community. It is also about the risks that such a platform poses for companies that grow on a new technical basis. After all, these new AI systems could one day be used to create competitors – automated duplicates of Reddit conversations.
