In contrast to the electricity and gas price brake, the relief for heating oil and pellets does not come automatically. In addition, various requirements must be met for the heating oil and pellet subsidy. The heating costs must be compared to the previous year at least doubled have – also applies:






  • Only the period from January 1st to December 1st, 2022 will be subsidised
  • Consumers must be able to prove that their heating costs have doubled
  • 80 percent of the doubling will be reimbursed – i.e. not the full amount
  • The funding ceiling should be 2,000 euros per household
  • An affidavit must be attached to the application


Heating oil and pellets: subsidy only on application – what that means for tenants

It is also possible that the Federal states handle the application and payment of heating oil and pellet aid differently. “Many details have not yet been worked out,” said Oliver Klapschus from the “HeizOel24” comparison portal at the end of December 2022 in an interview with our editors. Therefore, one cannot say much about the planned subsidy at the moment. Based on the planned key points, the affected heating oil and pellet customers can already prepare for a possible application.

Subsidy for heating oil and pellets: the landlord must take this into account

For landlords, however, there is a special feature in the relief: In contrast to the owner – who lives in his own living space – landlords still have to formally declare, according to information from the “Stuttgarter Zeitung”, that they will pass on the subsidy for heating oil or pellets to their tenants. In this case, too, the exact procedure is not yet clear. It is conceivable about the grant to be passed on to the tenants via a reduction in the ancillary costs or by bank transfer.

The advantage for the tenants: they don’t have to deal with the application at first. However, it may take longer for them to get the money. Especially since it is still completely unclear when exactly the subsidies for heating oil, pellets and liquid gas will actually be paid out in 2023. In addition to important details about the process, there is also no concrete timetable yet. At the moment, affected consumers can only see whether they are eligible and, if so, how much the subsidy is.
