Rent increase in Maywood frozen until the end of September

Hortensia Flores says that it is increasingly difficult to meet the monthly rental payment for her Maywood home.

The amount, he points out, has increased annually by 10%.

“There should be a cap every so often because imagine five years from now, how much does one more pay,” said Flores.

To try to protect residents like Flores, the city of Maywood extended the rent freeze until September 28. After that date, an ordinance will go into effect limiting rent increases to 4% per year.

“You can’t (be) evicted from your home without good reason,” Maywood Mayor Frank Garcia said. “They can’t just throw you out on the street just for wanting to raise your rent.”

Maywood’s mayor stressed the importance of supporting tenants in the face of difficult economic times.

“Who can pay those expensive rents?” Garcia said. “It is a way to get those people out of our neighborhoods where we have always lived.”

The authorities acknowledge that, despite the approved measures, many property owners continue to increase rents above what is established.

“It’s the corporations that are coming into cities like Maywood, Cudahy, Bell Gardens, Bell, that are encompassing the properties and doing these things,” Garcia said.

Faced with this situation, many tenants do not know what to do.

“You don’t know where to go,” says Flores. “Many times one does not have information because until now we are experiencing these problems.”

The mayor noted that the city offers legal advice to all tenants who need support to report any increase or eviction attempt.

“If they are trying to evict you from your home, you can come to City Hall, fill out the paperwork,” Garcia said. “We have people who help with that.”
