NY.– Republicans upset with the process against former President Donald Trump are trying to smear the prosecutor in the case, falsely asserting that New York City is a place overwhelmed by crime.

The House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Republican Jim Jordan, will hold a hearing Monday near the office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

The panel’s Republican majority calls the hearing an examination of the “pro-crime” and “anti-victim” policies of Bragg, who is a Democrat. One commission member, Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., tweeted that Bragg “has turned New York City into a swamp” and that “lawlessness is totally out of control.”

Democrats view the session as a partisan show that only amplifies conservative anger against Bragg, Manhattan’s first black district attorney.

New York City officials have implored Jordan to cancel the session. C-SPAN refused to air it on television.

“This is simply a donation to the Trump campaign,” Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat and former police captain, told CNN on Friday. “This is truly a charade and it is unfortunate that in these times, they are using taxpayer money to organize this charade.”

Monday’s hearing is just the latest attempt by Jordan to use his legislative powers to defend Trump from what he sees as a politicized process.

Jordan has sent letters to Bragg demanding testimony and documents, arguing that the prosecution must submit to legislative scrutiny because it receives federal subsidies. He subpoenaed Mark Pomerantz, a former prosecutor who previously oversaw the Trump investigation.

Bragg sued Jordan last week in an attempt to block the subpoena, which he called “a brazen and unconstitutional attack” as part of a “transparent campaign to intimidate” his office. A federal judge set a hearing in the case for Wednesday.
