According to Carina Härlin at the County Administrative Board, it is the size of the bog at Store Mosse and the fact that it is so old that makes it so interesting to study. Store Mosse, between Gnosjö and Värnamo, is southern Sweden’s largest bog area with its 80 square kilometers.

– It is actually an archive from 10,000 years. This means that you can look at what the climate was like 5000 years ago. You can also use the plants and white mosses that are here today to look at things that are happening here today and say what the climate might be like in the future as well, says Carina.

Several different research fields

In recent days, researchers from several countries have met each other for the first time to exchange their experience about what each in their respective field has researched about Store Mosse.

– We have ecologists who work with plants and animals, we have geologists who work with soil and rock. We have people looking at trees and tree rings, we have people looking at worms, gas emissions, chemistry. We come from very different fields with a variety of tools that we use to research one and the same place, says Malin Kylander at Stockholm University.
