The co-creator and star of the acclaimed Adult Swim animated series has been charged with alleged domestic violence in 2020 against a woman he was dating at the time.
Justin Roiland, co-creator and star of the animated series rick and mortywas charged for alleged domestic violence that occurred in 2020. As reported NBC NewsJustin Roiland is the subject of two counts, for domestic assault with bodily harm and false imprisonment by threat, violence, fraud and/or deception.
Although he pleaded not guilty in October 2020, Justin Roiland appeared in court last week for a preliminary hearing. The trial date has not yet been set. He is expected for another preliminary hearing on April 27.
Events in 2020
According to court documents obtained by NBC News, the incident occurred around January 19, 2020, against an unidentified woman whom Justin Roiland was dating. At the time, the co-creator of rick and morty had been released on bail of 50,000 dollars, filed on August 13, 2020, before being charged on October 14 of the same year.
“Not only is Justin innocent, but we expect this case to be closed as soon as the DA’s office completes its methodical review of the evidence,” his attorney, T. Edward Welbourn, told the outlet’Variety’.
He added, “We look forward to clearing Justin’s name and helping him move forward as quickly as possible.”
Currently, a restraining order prevents Justin Roiland from harassing, threatening, surveilling, or even coming within 30 meters of the complainant and he is prohibited from possessing a firearm until further notice.
Creators and voice actors of animated series
Justin Roiland made a name for himself thanks to the animated series rick and morty from Adult Swim, which he co-created with Dan Harmon and in which he also lends his voice to the main characters, Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith.
Broadcast since 2015 in France, rick and morty chronicles the misadventures of Rick, a cynical scientist, and his easily influenced grandson, Morty. The sixth season ended in December 2022.
The director and producer also co-created the series Solar Opposites, broadcast on Disney+. He has also dubbed many characters in series such as Adventure Time, Gravity Falls or Fish Hooks and founded his animation studio Justin Roiland’s Solo Vanity Card Productions.
