Ride or Die to liven up the summer

NEW YORK.- Bad Boys: Ride or Die, the fourth installment of the action comedy series Will Smith-Martin Lawrence, will be released with an estimated collection of 56 million dollars in theaters USA and Canada over the weekend, giving Hollywood a much-needed summer hit and Smith his biggest hit since he slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars.

Sony Pictures’ release was very close to, or slightly above, its forecast.

Ride or Die, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, is Smith’s first theatrical test since his slap at Rock in 2022 earned him a 10-year suspension from the Oscars. The Bad Boys film was in development at the time and was temporarily put on hold, but ultimately moved forward with a production budget of approximately $100 million.

However, movie theaters will need a lot more than Bad Boys: Ride or Die to right the ship this summer. Ticket sales are down 26% from last year and more than 40% below pre-pandemic totals, according to Comscore. A big test will come next weekend with the release of Pixar’s Inside Out 2. After sending several Pixar releases directly to Disney+, this time the studio has promised a long, traditional theatrical release.

Last weekend’s top movie, The Garfield Movie, fell to second place. Also from Sony, the animated family comedy grossed $10 million in ticket sales during its third weekend, raising its domestic gross to $68.6 million.
