There were riots during a protest against a planned refugee accommodation in Grevesmühlen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. As the police in Wismar announced late Thursday, up to 700 people gathered in front of the conference building on the occasion of an extraordinary district council meeting to demonstrate against the accommodation in the Upahl community.

According to the information, “part of the congregation” tried to gain entry to the building, but was prevented and pushed back by police officers. The police saw themselves exposed to “verbal aggression”.

In the meeting room itself, pyrotechnics were also ignited several times by unknown persons. The meeting itself was therefore registered, police officers were on site. According to the district, the district council approved the construction of the container accommodation at its meeting at the end.

The police, which was deployed with around 120 forces in front of the conference building, initiated investigations into serious trespassing and violations of the assembly law. Administrative offense proceedings are underway because of the fireworks. The meeting was finally ended by the chairman of the meeting.

The Green Youth Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania spoke of an attack by right-wing extremists. “Racist slogans, torches and attempts to storm the meeting room have nothing to do with legitimate protest, but only teem with contempt for human beings,” it said in a statement.

According to the district of Northwest Mecklenburg, it is about creating temporary accommodation in a container for up to 400 refugees and asylum seekers in an industrial area. Recently there had also been protests against asylum accommodation in Saxony.

The right-wing extremist Free Saxony party, among others, regularly mobilizes for this there. An arson attack was carried out on a planned home in Bautzen in October. (AFP)
