The prices of all types of food in Algeria are experiencing spikes that worry Algerian citizens, putting a strain on their wallets. In fact, in recent years, prices have continued to rise, whether for meat, fruit and vegetables, but also basic food products (oil, flour, semolina, milk, etc.).

It is to deal with these price increases, the country’s high authorities are adopting new measures aimed at protecting Algerian consumers.

It is in this context that the National Cattle Feed Office (ONAB) announced today, Tuesday February 14, 2023, via a press release made public, the capping of the price of broiler chicken at 350 Algerian dinars per kilogram, at the level of all the points of sale belonging to the office throughout the national territory.

In this press release, ONAB specified that this decision comes in application of the instructions of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and following the surge in prices on the market.

Algeria chooses to import meat from Colombia

With the approach of the holy month of Ramadan, the subject of the importation of red meat resurfaces. And so the authorities are in a race against time to find solutions to the soaring meat prices that have shaken the Algerian market for several months.

In this sense, several options are available to the Algerian authorities, between exporting beef from Europe and adopting the barter system (goods for cattle). Algeria has finally chosen to import Colombian meat!

The reliance on imports was predictable. Since the prices of this food have reached record highs. Indeed, the kilogram of red meat exceeds 1,800 Algerian dinars, on many Algerian markets. Indeed, the prices displayed are not within everyone’s reach. Especially for low income citizens.
