The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) announced that Saudi Arabia plans to host peace talks on Ukraine with Western countries and some Russian allies such as Brazil, India, South Africa and Turkey at the beginning of August. This would be the second time that a Middle Eastern country shows its interest in supporting peace between kyiv and Moscow.
Now this Monday, the governments of Russia and Ukraine confirmed that these talks, whose goal is that with this meeting they can culminate in a peace summit this year, in which international leaders would support common principles to resolve the war in Ukraine. which, in turn, could serve as the basis for more Ukrainian-friendly negotiations between Kiev and Moscow.
According to Ukrainian spokesman Andriy Yermak, President Volodimir Zelensky is convinced that the Ukrainian peace plan should be taken as a basis, adding that we try to take into account opinions and positions that do not contradict the Charter of the UN.
“The Ukrainian peace formula contains ten fundamental points, which in addition to guaranteeing peace for Ukraine will create mechanisms to counter future conflicts.“said the spokesman for the presidential office
For its part, Russia said Monday at a press conference that it will closely follow the meeting on Ukraine in Saudi Arabia, which is scheduled for August. Until now, the Kremlin has announced that this event will take place without the participation of its representatives.
“Of course, Russia will closely follow this meeting (…) We have repeatedly said that any attempt to contribute to a peaceful settlement of the situation in Ukraine deserves a positive assessment,” said the spokesman for the Russian Presidency, Dmitri Peskov. .
Since the start of possible peace talks, which have been promoted by China, Brazil, South Africa, Turkey, France, Belarus, the United States, India and now the Middle East, Kiev has made it clear that the only way to return to agree with Moscow is that there be a ceasefire and a withdrawal of troops from its territory, including the annexed Crimean Peninsula.
Both countries have been positive with the proposals of China, Brazil, South Africa, Turkey and India to find a solution to the conflict. However, neither side has been respectful of the ceasefire.
