Russian bombings in the hours before and after the turn of the year left at least four people dead and fifty wounded in Ukraine, according to the Ukrainian army, which said it shot down more than 40 Iranian-made unmanned explosive drones involved in the attacks.

The shelling took place in kyiv and seven other regions of Ukraine, according to local and regional authorities.

Three people were killed, including a 22-year-old girl, in the western city of Khmelnitsky, and a fourth was killed after a Russian shelling in the southern Zaporizhia region, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Among the wounded are two teenagers, ages 13 and 12, who live in a village near the southern city of Kherson, retaken by Ukrainian troops in November.

In the center of kyiv, a missile hit the facade of a hotel.

Police chief Andrii Nebitov posted on Facebook an image of the wreckage of a drone that read the words “Happy New Year” in Russian. “This is all you need to know about the terrorist state and its military,” he wrote.

The Ukrainian army announced that it had shot down 45 Iranian-made drones last morning, although it did not specify whether these robots used as projectiles hit their targets.
