UA team of Russian hackers known as Cold River targeted three US nuclear labs (Brookhaven, Argonne and Lawrence Livermore) last summer, according to data Reuters has seen.
This targeting came days after Vladimir Putin said Russia would be ready to use nuclear weapons to defend its territory. Hackers created fake login pages for each lab and emailed scientists to retrieve passwords.

Reuters had its findings analyzed by five experts, who confirmed Cold River’s involvement in the attempted hacking of the labs. Cold River’s involvement could be confirmed based on shared fingerprints that researchers were able to link to the group in the past.
Reuters was unable to establish why the laboratories were victims of hacking attempts or whether any of the attempts were successful. None of the laboratories concerned has commented on the case.
