Apple’s web browser has once again risen to second place among the most used desktop web browsers in the world. Safari is therefore more popular than Edge as a desktop browser, but it still does not manage to dethrone Chrome.
Safari is Apple’s pre-installed web browser on iPhones, iPads and Macs, but users can still install another browser if they wish. The data collected by StatCounter confirms that Safari is currently the second most used desktop web browser in the world. We are therefore not talking about mobile browsers, but about browsers installed on computers.
This is good news for the Apple browser that was made dethroned by Microsoft Edge last year. Safari managed to overtake Edge last month, but only slightly. It obviously remains very far behind the unbeatable Google Chrome installed on the majority of computers in the world.
Safari is hot on the heels of Microsoft Edge in the race for desktop web browsers
In April 2023, 11.87% of users use Safari on their computer while Microsoft Edge attracts only 11% of users. Google Chrome is largely leading the race with 66.13% users. Suffice to say that he is not likely to be dethroned anytime soon. Amazon could even launch its own web browser to try to outclass Chrome and Safari, but the task looks daunting.
Chrome, Safari and Edge are therefore the three most popular desktop web browsers in the world. They are followed by Mozilla Firefox (5,65 %), Opera (3,09 %) et Internet Explorer (0,55 %). Even if Google Chrome is in the lead, this does not prevent it from also being the most vulnerable web browser compared to its competitors. Opera is also one of the least vulnerable.
Finally, the web browser market is as competitive as ever. Safari may not hold second place for long, especially if its competitors grow faster than it does. We think in particular of Microsoft who wants to improve Edge with artificial intelligence. Its Bing search engine already integrates ChatGPT. In any case, Apple should present the new features and improvements to Safari at WWDC23 from June 5 to 9, 2023.
