San Salvador 2023: Luis Joel Castro brings the first Puerto Rican gold medal in athletics

The jumper Luis Joel Castro managed this Monday to bring the first gold medal in athletics for Puerto Rico at the Central American and Caribbean Games San Salvador 2023.

Castro finished with 2.25 in the high jump at the Jorge “El Mágico” González National Stadium.

Alysbeth Félix obtained the bronze medal in athletics. Felix made a jump of 6.44 meters.

Meanwhile, the Puerto Rico men’s pistol team won a bronze medal in the 25-meter rapid fire event, the last event for the specialty being at the XXIV Central American and Caribbean Games San Salvador 2023.

The trio of Luis López, Michael Vega and Javier Medina colluded to add 1569 points. The gold medal went to Cuba with Jorge Álvarez, Jorge Grau and Leuris Pupo with 1684 points. The Guatemalans competing for Centro Caribe Sports, Albino Jiménez, José Castillo and David Castillo, won silver with 1600 points.

It is the third medal they have won by teams with their first bronze in Havana 1982 and Mayagüez 2010.

Sport shooting in San Salvador has won a gold medal, two silver and with this, two bronze, for a total of five.

This Tuesday they will finish the competition with the mixed team 10 meter rifle event.

Men’s handball semifinals

The men’s handball team defeated the Nicaraguan team 45-29 in the second match of the group stage, to advance to the semifinals of the San Salvador 2023 tournament.

Puerto Rico will finish this Tuesday the preliminary against Mexico. The meeting will be at 5:00 pm (3:00 pm El Salvador).

Softball: Puerto Rico victory in extra innings

The women’s softball team earned a huge victory, 9-5, over the team from Venezuela in 10 innings.

The Puerto Rican team was winning the game until the top of the fifth inning, 3-0. The red wine came up in the seventh episode tying the score, 3-3.

In search of victory as a visiting team, the Puerto Ricans scored a fourth run to have a minimal advantage, 4-3 in the eighth inning. But, Venezuela did not want to give up, taking the game 4-4.

It was in the tenth chapter of the drama, that Puerto Rico had a bunch of five runs and took a 9-4 lead. The attempt by the Venezuelan rivals only added one run, 9-5, for the national team to win the challenge.

Taran Alvelo wins the game by pitching 6 1/3 innings. Thus, Puerto Rico has a 2-0 record and Venezuela 2-.1.

Archery: Paola Ramírez and Jean Pizarro advance to the quarterfinals

The compound bow specialists Paola Ramírez and Jean Pizarro qualified this Monday for the quarterfinal series of the Central American and Caribbean competition.

Ramírez defeated the Dominican Carlina Guzmán Morati 147-140. This Wednesday she will face the Colombian Juliana Gallego López at 11:36 am (9:36 am El Salvador).

For his part, Pizarro eliminated Salvadoran Miguel Ángel Veliz 147-145. The next duel will be against the Colombian Daniel Muñoz this Wednesday at 12:48 pm (10:48 am El Salvador).

Fencing: Fifth place for César Colón

In the individual men’s foil, César Colón was the furthest athlete to reach fifth position. He lost the pass to the semifinals with the Mexican Diego Cervantes, 15-4. For his part, Carlos Padua was eliminated by Colón in the round of 16 in a 15-11 match.
