San Salvador 2023: Puerto Rican boxers enter the ring

Puerto Rico has already defined the first fights that will enter the ring of the XXIV Central American and Caribbean Games San Salvador 2023. The action of the boxers will begin this Thursday with four fights divided into the two sections of the Central American card.

The first fights of the Puerto Rico Delegation will be in the first section to start at 4:00 pm (2:00 pm El Salvador). In the 50 kilos, Krystal Rosado will be active against the Dominican Novoanny Núñez. For his part, Eliezer Brito will face the Venezuelan Diego Pereyra in the 80 kilos.

In the second session of the day, 9:00 pm (7:00 pm El Salvador), Puerto Rico will have two bouts. The first of them in the 51 kilos with Elliot Vázquez versus the Colombian and Olympic medalist, Yuberjén Martínez. Meanwhile, Caleb Tirado will fight the Jamaican Sanju Williams at 57 kilos.

“It is the first regional event of the cycle and many countries, like us, are renewing part of the team, therefore, all the rivals are careful. We know that in some divisions you have veteran athletes, who should be favorites because of experience. But, you have to go out and fight with everyone. That’s what we prepare for,” said national coach Carlos “Cholo” Espada, after leaving the weigh-in and the draw.

One of the athletes who will not be competing on the first day will be Ashleyann Lozada. She advanced to the second round and will wait until Friday to go up to the roped. The 57-kilo fighter and gold medalist in Barranquilla 2018 awaits her rival who will come out of the fight between the Guatemalan competing under Centro Caribe Sports, Leilany Reyes, and the Colombian Valeria Arboleda.

Next, we present the calendar of the boxers and boxers in the first phase of the competition. For Saturday, June 24, in the 60 kilos, Tatiana Ortiz versus the Dominican Jessica Muñoz; 63.5 kilos, Dennys Cabán versus the Costa Rican Yader Centeno; 71 kilos, Ángel Llanos versus the Nicaraguan Elías Palacios. Puerto Rican boxing data in Central American and Caribbean Games

It is the twentieth participation of men in the Central American and Caribbean competition since its debut in 1938. They accumulate 98 medals, including 21 gold, 30 silver and 47 bronze.

For their part, the women began their journey in the Veracruz 2014 Games with a second stop in Barranquilla 2018 adding six medals with three gold and three bronze. Kiria Tapia was the first gold medal winner for Puerto Rico in the 60 kilos and the first bronze medalist was Mercedes Alicea in the 51 kilos category. Both achievements on Veracruz land.

In the last contest, Ashleyann Lozada (57 kilos) and Nilsa Rodríguez (75 kilos) won gold medals. The bronze medalists were Angelyris López (60 kilos) and Stehpanie Piñero (64 kilos). For San Salvador 2023 Lozada returns to defend her title in the 57 kilos and Piñero will seek gold in the 66 kilos.

Boxing in San Salvador 2023 will award places for the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games to the finalists in each category.

The programming on Telemundo and Punto 2 of the regional fair will begin this Friday with the Opening Ceremony at 8:30 pm (Puerto Rico time) from the Jorge Mágico González National Stadium, San Salvador, El Salvador.

Starting on Saturday, the transmission will be daily from 2:00 pm, until Saturday, July 8, which will conclude with the Closing Ceremony.
