Oscar winner Javier Bardem will receive the Donostia Honorary Award at this year’s San Sebastian Film Festival. The 54-year-old Spaniard will receive the career-wide award on September 22 at the opening gala of the 71st edition of the festival at the Kursaal Auditorium in the northern Spanish city, organizers said today.

Bardem is “currently the most internationally renowned Spanish actor” and has received more than a hundred awards worldwide, it said. The 54-year-old won the 2008 Best Supporting Actor Oscar for playing a hitman in No Country for Old Men. Most recently, he was nominated for the coveted award for Best Actor for his work in Being the Ricardos last year. In addition, there is a Golden Globe Award, a Premio Goya and a European Film Award.

The 71st edition of the Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastian will take place between September 22nd and 30th. It is the most important film festival in Spain. Greats of the film business such as Alfred Hitchcock, Bette Davis and Lana Turner were guests in the picturesque city on the Atlantic. The main prize, the Golden Shell, is named after the shape of the bay on which the Basque metropolis is situated.
