Launched in late 2020, the PlayStation 5 was an instant hit. Nevertheless, this launch was not normal, because it took place in the middle of the chip crisis and there were massive delivery problems for a long time. So-called scalpers benefited from this. But now they have a problem.

Karma is a bitch: This is probably a sentence that hardly needs translation and it sums up what is currently happening to shady PlayStation 5 console resellers. Because they bought – with the help of bots – for many months and even years – all the PS5s they could get their hands on.

They then sold these devices via eBay and Co. to fans who couldn’t or didn’t want to wait for a console at the regular price – and despite many calls not to become part of this rip-off system, there were a lot of them. The scalpers made a lot of money with this business model, or rather with this scam. Because Sony needed an extremely long time before they could produce sufficient quantities to be able to meet the demand regularly. To be precise, the situation has only eased in the past few weeks and months.

Scalpers now have to sell off

So scalpers didn’t have a reason to change anything for a long time and so they bought up consoles en masse until recently. But now PS5s are available more or less normally and the resellers are stuck on their consoles. How TheGamer and tech spot report, you can get a PlayStation 5 on eBay and Co. for the RRP or even significantly less. There are also corresponding threads Reddit and there the opinion is unequivocal, because gloating reigns supreme. Many write that they don’t feel sorry at all and hope that the scalpers’ prices will drop even further, so that their losses will be even greater.

And indeed, things could get even worse for such traders, at least if they can’t significantly reduce their inventories soon. Because there are persistent rumors about a PS5 Pro, which should then result in a massive price drop for (used) normal PS5s.
