It was designed to treat severe pain in patientsbut its effects have led to its illicit manufacture and distribution, which has caused an overdose crisis especially in the United States (USA).

Mexico is a red dot due to the manufacture of fentanyl, which is supposedly led by the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG), although the CJNG has distanced itself from fentanyl. The truth is that on February 1, Sedena seized a large shipment of fentanyl.
