When it comes to the weight loss journey, there are foods that obviously should be avoided, such as ultra-processed foods, soft drinks and sweets. However, some healthy foods can also end up sabotaging the weight loss diet – the problem is in the amount of calories.
Nutritionist Lorena Balestra, from São Paulo, says that the most important thing for healthy weight loss is to have a plan directed towards your health and routine. But foods like restaurant smoothies and salad can make the process difficult.
“These foods can be a real pitfall for patients undergoing treatment for overweight or obesity. Therefore, prioritize low amounts of sugar, regular physical activity, plenty of water and a good night’s sleep”, suggests the doctor.
She highlights some foods that can ruin a weight loss diet. Check out:
smoothies
Smoothies are well-known vitamins among athletes and individuals who follow a balanced diet. But if the preparation is not done correctly, the drink can be caloric and have effects contrary to those who want to lose weight.
The options available in some cafeterias are the most harmful, since the preparation contains a high sugar content and little added protein. However, if prepared at home, based on fruits, vegetables and seeds, the smoothie can be much less caloric and offer a good nutritional boost.
Dry fruits
Even though dried fruits are easy to eat, they can retain a sugar content similar to that of some treats. After all, if the fruits are wilted, it means that they have lost all their water and hydration power, but they still have fructose.

“Dried fruits are great options to quench the craving for a sweet treat, as they have a more pronounced sweet taste. However, they should be consumed in moderation. It is recommended, whenever possible, to eat the fruit in natura”, warns Lorena.

Self service salads can become a trap for the patient who does not know how to control the amount of food, or still does not know how to make the best choices for losing body fat.

vegetable milk
Plant-based milks are generally considered healthier, as they are not made from animal products. However, some, such as almonds, are extremely poor in the drink’s most important composition: protein.
Vegetable drinks, according to the nutrologist, may contain a high fat content or many preservatives. A nutritious and light option is soy milk, which contains about 80 to 90 calories per serving, half that of cow’s milk.
restaurant salads
Another ambush is going to a restaurant, ordering a salad and believing that the dish will be low in calories. Many mixes are composed of ingredients such as cheese and sauces, which increase the amount of calories in the meal.
Self-service salads can also become a trap for the patient who does not know how to control the amount of food, or still does not know how to make the best choices to lose body fat.
Cereal bars
Cereal bars can be a good source of vitamins B, C, E and potassium, but they are also full of sugar. “Depending on the combination of ingredients, they can contain a lot of carbohydrates and a lot of fat, which appear disguised on the labels with little-known names”, says Lorena.
