Horst Lichter and his mustache are as popular with “Bares for Rares” as the offers. What many do not know, however, is that the presenter used to be a bodybuilder.

Horst Lichter is in the mind of many TV viewers as the funny moderator of the program “Bares for Rares”, known for his sayings. Since 2013, Lichter has recorded more than 1,400 episodes of the popular show and impresses on television with both his style and his moustache. What many fans of the former TV chef don’t know, however, was that Lichter was once a bodybuilder.

Three years ago, Lichter was featured in a celebrity edition of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? (WWM) asked about his sporting past – including a photo. Lichter, who already wore his mustache back then, had a toned body and an eight-pack. At that time, according to his own statements, Lichter trained seven times a week and continued to use the equipment even after his shift work.

“Trained very young, very bad”

In a BR broadcast, Lichter said: “Yes, actually true.” When asked what was left of it to this day, the moderator answered cheekily: “The mustache”. He added that his wife still thinks today that you see “a little bit” of what happened back then. At WWM he explained in 2020: “I trained very young, very badly.”

Because what sounds harmless led to serious health problems for Lichter. At the age of 26, the “Bares for Rares” man suffered his first stroke. The second stroke with a heart attack followed just two years later at the age of 28.

In a medical documentary released last year, Lichter explained of his health setbacks more than 30 years ago: “Stress, too much work, worry, and I wasn’t taking care of myself. I was thinking – like young people tend to be do–this body lasts forever.” Lights himself also said in the documentary that the events had shaken him awake and that he has been living more consciously since then.

He also sent an appeal: “You have to take care of your body, as well as things that you value very much or friendships, love and marriage.” Because Lichter is a fan of cars and vintage cars, he compared a body to it, saying, “You just have to take the inspections, maintenance and care seriously.” Over the years, while Lighter has lost his bodybuilding physique, he has built a healthier life.
