A man residing in Posadas was sentenced to three years in prison suspended by the Federal Court of Corrientes, after having admitted in an abbreviated trial his guilt in sending, from Misiones to Buenos Aires, just over 62 kilograms of marijuana through of a parcel service.

This is Armando Daniel Careaga (58), a plumber, who has a record related to this type of crime and even a previous conviction (2014) for marketing narcotics. This time he confessed that in February 2021 he shipped the substance hidden inside the structure of six divan-type armchairs, to the city of Pompeii.

Careaga’s identity appeared both as the sender and as the person who would receive the shipment, so when the National Gendarmerie detected the maneuver when reviewing the transport of cargo at a checkpoint near Corrientes, it was not difficult to find and stop him.

In this instance and given the latent possibility of sitting on the bench in an oral trial, the posadeño decided to admit his criminal responsibility for the crime of attempted transportation of narcotics and together with the official defender, Enzo Mario Di Tella and the prosecutor, Carlos Schaefer, agreed to the sentence that will keep him released subject to compliance with certain rules of conduct.

The sentence was approved by Judge Víctor Alonso from Corrientes, who also fined him a sum of 4,000 pesos and declared his recidivism.

False bottom

According to the conviction, the crime that Careaga now confessed to was discovered shortly before noon on February 28, 2021 by gendarmes stationed at a checkpoint on national route 14 at the height of the inactive tollbooth in the town of Bonpland, in Currents.

In 2014 the posadeño had been convicted of another drug cause.

The feds stopped the march of a truck belonging to a parcel transport company from Posadas bound for Buenos Aires. In the search, they detected six divan-type armchairs covered under the guide 0001-00026779, with sender and recipient in the name of Daniel Armando Careaga, drawing attention – according to what they declared – the weight and smell emanating from the packages.

They were scanned and confirmed that inside each one there was a false bottom with the packages of marijuana, 59 in total, for which they judicially decided a controlled delivery. On March 8, when Careaga tried to withdraw the shipments, he was arrested and brought before the Federal Justice.
