‘AThe daughters of fire’ is on the list announced today by the festival’s organization, of the “films that complete the Official Selection” of the 76th edition, which runs from May 16th to 27th.

According to the production, in a press release released today, the short film ‘The daughters of fire’ is “performed by singers Elizabeth Pinard, Alice Costa and Karyna Gomes”.

In the film, a production by Clarão Companhia, “the conductor and harpsichordist Marcos Magalhães directs Os Músicos do Tejo”.

Filmmaker Pedro Costa presented, for the first time, in 2016, at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in Lisbon, a multidisciplinary collaboration with Os Músicos do Tejo.

The show, which was artistically directed by Pedro Costa, used images that the filmmaker captured during the filming of ‘Casa da Lava’ (1994), in Cape Verde.

These images were also used by the filmmaker in the two projections he presented in 2013 at the exhibition ‘Visitação. The Archive: Memory and Promise’, which was on display at the Museum of S. Roque, in Lisbon.

The film ‘The daughters of fire’, from 2019, was presented last year at the Center Pompidou, in Paris, as part of the exhibition ‘The rest is shadow’, which included works by Pedro Costa, sculptor Rui Chafes and photographer Paulo Nozolino .

The official selection of the 76th Festival de Cannes includes films by directors such as Martin Scorsese, Alice Rohrwacher, Nani Moretti, Aki Kaurismaki, Wim Wenders, Wang Bing, Ken Loach, Marco Bellocchio, Wes Anderson, Hirokazu Kore-eda and Kléber Mendonça Filho .

The opening film will be ‘Jeanne du Barry’, shot and performed by French director Maiwenn, with the participation of actor Johnny Depp.

In its 76th edition, the Cannes Film Festival is chaired for the first time by a woman, the German executive Iris Knobloch.

The jury of the official competition this year will be chaired by the Swedish director Ruben Ostlund.

In the “Un Certain Regard” section, the film ‘A Flor do Buriti’, by Brazilian director Renée Nader Messora and Portuguese João Salaviza, is shot with the Krahô indigenous people of Brazil.

The Portuguese director of photography Rui Poças is part of the jury of the Critics’ Week, in which the short film ‘Corpos Cintilantes’, by the Portuguese director Inês Teixeira, will be in competition.

The Fortnight of Filmmakers will honor ‘Vale Abraão’ (1993), a film by Manoel de Oliveira, placing an image of actress Leonor Silveira, the film’s protagonist, on the official poster.

In this independent program, parallel to the Cannes Film Festival and organized by the Society of Film Directors for over 50 years, the film “Légua”, by Filipa Reis and João Miller Guerra, will be screened.
