Shrek is without a doubt a cult figure on the internet. Four films, two spin-offs and a seemingly endless amount of memes have firmly established the brand around the ogre in pop culture. However, while recently with Puss in Boots 2 Since the second spin-off was released in cinemas, it has been more than twelve years since the fourth Shrek film. Despite much speculation, it was relatively quiet for years about a possible fifth part. However, an interview which the actor Antonio Banderas recently, might provide some hope. Banderas voices Puss in Boots in the English version of the film.

Speaking to Radiotimes.com when asked about the status of Puss in Boots sequels and the appearance of familiar characters, Banderas said: “It’s not up to me, usually sequels are audience driven.

[Aber] if they go to the cinema in large numbers, as they are currently doing with Puss in Boots, then that could potentially lead to another Puss in Boots movie. Or, as the film suggests towards the end when you watch “Far Far Away,” they visit some old friends at the end of the film – maybe Shrek will come back. I don’t know, there are many different ways these characters can go on, but it’s not up to me, it’s up to the audience somewhere.

Banderas hinted at Shrek’s return to cinemas during the Red Sea Film Festival in December. There is currently no official announcement or confirmation from Dreamworks. But both the positive reviews for the film and the financial success of the second strip should not have escaped the company. Screenrant emphasizes that the fifth Shrek film since 2016 appears to be in the works.

Eddie Murphy had announced at the time that a script for the film was ready. Comicbookmovie throws up the option that Shrek 5 could possibly be announced after the Oscars. After all, Puss in Boots 2 was nominated in the category “Best Animated Feature Film”.
