She came, saw… and moderated. Dunja Hayali joined the “heute-journal” team on Monday. A kind of return for the 48-year-old journalist, after all she worked as a co-moderator for the ZDF magazine between 2007 and 2010.
Such a comeback can truly be imagined as being happier and friendlier. War and catastrophe, Hayali, dressed in a white blouse and black pantsuit, led the show in this thematic bracket.
Between war and catastrophe
US President Joe Biden in the capital of Ukraine, which will soon have to hold its own against the Russian invasion for a year – this entry was almost identical to the “heute” post at 7 p.m. But the subsequent conversation with Moldova’s President Maida Sandu broadened the horizon. The post on whether the soon to be ten rounds of EU sanctions would have really damaged Russia’s economy remained within this framework: Russia’s economic output apparently shrank by only 2.1 percent in 2022.

Dunja Hayali became more relaxed over the course of the 30 minutes, gestures were added to facial expressions, this presenter is clearly less difficult to keep track of the times than her colleague Marietta Slomka. It’s not that she doesn’t take serious things seriously, but apparently she’s giving her optimism a real chance, despite all the wars and catastrophes. We can do it, she seemed about to say.
Of course, a broadcaster with headquarters in Mainz has to pay tribute to the carnival processions on the Rhine this Monday, so the merriment became the bouncer of Hayali’s premiere. Her final sentence is: “Then take care wherever you are.”
