She sweetened many an early meeting in lockdown. Now it’s over: the snap camera is discontinued. With the help of this quasi-intermediate, virtual camera, it is possible to show yourself as a cucumber or potato, but also as a sexy alien or, thanks to the beauty filter, with the Chiara Ohoven effect. As of January 25, 2023, the Snap Camera will no longer be available, Snapchat’s support page now says.

In concrete terms, this means that the snap camera will no longer be applicable. Instead, users should select “Snapchat for Web” – this would allow filters to continue to be used. However, the application only runs on Chrome and Edge with the latest versions on the desktop, mobile is not supported. The provides instructions on how to uninstall the Snap Camera support pageand prompts you to change the camera settings.

The virtual camera could be selected as the default camera. Without a corresponding selection, the image remained a normal one, but if you made a filter selection, it remained activated if necessary – even when you started it again. This led to the amusing incident of a US judge presenting himself as a cat in a video conference – and not knowing how to take the filter out. In the viral video, the lawyer asserts that he is actually present and really not a cat.

You can also use Snapchat’s Lens Studio to create your own masks and filters. So nobody really has to do without the cucumber. However, since video conferencing tools such as teams and zoom are now increasingly being used again for work and less in the private sphere, the intended uses are probably fewer.

Snapchat has only been available as a web version since the summer. Not all functions have moved in since then. Chats and Lenses for video calls made the start. The social network, which is based on chats and media that disappear after specified times, is a kind of pioneer of services such as Instagram Stories and even Tiktok, but then collapsed significantly – users disappeared, employees were fired. After the course cellar, a comeback did not follow until the beginning of 2022.

Snap convinced investors, among other things, with the very first quarterly profit. The company posted quarterly earnings of $22.6 million, down from $113 million a year earlier. Snap is increasingly able to make investments in the future on its own, said co-founder and boss Evan Spiegel in an interview with analysts. The number of daily active Snapchat users rose within three months from 306 to 319 million – compared to the previous year even by 20 percent. At the end of 2022, however, there was another slump.
